The uncertainty of the future unsettled her.  It rose vast before her, a great wild thing, uncaring, unbending, untamable.  Time and time again she had, with great effort and cost, moved her whole self to peg down even the smallest sliver of it, only to watch as it shifted like mist, leaving the rope slack and empty in her hands.  But her desire to master it was to great - her fear of the wildness of fate to deep - to leave fortune to settle where it would; she bled her hands raw tying the ropes that would never hold it still.
